Doc's Presents: Bobby Rush

Bobby Rush has toured for more than fifty years, and Rolling Stone calls him King of the Chitlin' Circuit for it. He built his own sound from blues, soul, and funk, and it has earned him three Grammys. He wrote Chicken Heads in 1971. Now in his nineties, he still jumps into the air mid-song and lands right on the beat.

Doc's Presents: Bobby Rush

Thu, Nov 19

"Bobby Rush is more than a living legend. He is a living miracle. At 85 years old he not only continues to tour but still has the dancing moves that would make Mick Jagger, his junior by ten years or more, envious." -Glide Magazine "a potent shot of southern blues and soul; neat and straight from a living legend." -Americana Highways "A master storyteller who infuses a comic sense about blues tropes into raw instrumentation." -The Chicago Tribune

Bobby Rush grew up in Louisiana. His father was a preacher and a sharecropper, and he taught him guitar and harmonica after the fieldwork was done. He took those lessons on the road and never really got off it. Rolling Stone calls him the King of the Chitlin' Circuit for more than fifty years of touring. Along the way he built his own sound out of blues, soul, and funk. Three Grammys came out of that career, the latest for the album All My Love For You. He wrote Chicken Heads in 1971, and Buddy Guy and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram later joined him to record it again. He even shows up on screen, in a scene with Eddie Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name. None of it has slowed him down. He still jumps into the air mid-song and lands right on the beat.
