EL SWING: An Evening of Flamenco Jazz

Jesús Pacheco trained as a percussionist in Seville, Spain, then moved to Houston. He started Arte Puro's Flamenco-Jazz Trio with Thanushka Bandara on piano and Anthony McKinney on bass. At Doc's, flamenco dancer Ana María Barceló and horn player Joe Jenkins join them as guests. Her feet keep the beat, and his horn answers the letra, flamenco's sung words.

EL SWING: An Evening of Flamenco Jazz

Tue, Oct 06

Arte Puro's Flamenco-Jazz Trio is three players: Jesús Pacheco on percussion, Thanushka Bandara on piano, Anthony McKinney on bass. Pacheco trained in Seville, Spain. He moved to Houston in 2012 and still plays flamenco and jazz around town. Bandara studied piano at the University of Houston. His playing mixes jazz with Latin rhythms and the Indian classical music his father played at home. The trio's sound sits where cante, flamenco's raw voice, meets jazz. That mix goes back to saxophonist Pedro Iturralde and a young Paco de Lucía. They cut the album Jazz Flamenco in 1967. At Doc's, the trio adds two guests. Dancer Ana María Barceló has taught and performed in Houston for over a decade. Horn player Joe Jenkins plays in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Her feet and his horn carry the letra, flamenco's sung words, into the jazz.
