Jazz Titans: The 100th Anniversary of Miles and Coltrane

Felix DeLeon grew up right here in Houston, and he got his start on piano, then moved on to trumpet. He then went on to train some under Arturo Sandoval. Ernesto Vega grew up in Havana and moved to Houston in 2013. He plays reeds, and folks liked his tone right from the start.

Jazz Titans: The 100th Anniversary of Miles and Coltrane

Wed, Sep 23

Miles Davis and John Coltrane both turn 100 in 2026. This show treats that as one story, not two. Davis built his sound on space. He would rather leave out a note than play one too many. Coltrane went the other way. He stacked chords and stretched his solos until the horn seemed out of breath. The two men played together for years before they split. One record still stands above the rest: Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album ever made.

The Felix DeLeon Quartet takes the trumpet chair and traces Davis's cool side. Guest artist Ernesto Vega joins on clarinet and saxophone for the searching runs that later pointed toward free jazz, Coltrane's side of the story. Together, the band moves through both songbooks and the ground where the two men met in the middle.
