Doc's sits inside Montrose's 1936 Tower Theatre, a movie theater whose stage has hosted Ella Fitzgerald and Leon Russell. Jazzmeia Horn steps onto it as a Texas native, born in Dallas in 1991 and raised on gospel by a church-going family. Her jazz-loving grandmother picked her name.
She trained at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, then at The New School's School of Jazz in New York. She won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2013 and the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2015, and signed with Concord Records.
Her albums A Social Call and Love and Liberation were both nominated for a Grammy. Dear Love is a big band record built on poetry and spoken word. She wrote the book Strive From Within, and she teaches singers around the world.
About Doc's Houston
Doc's is Houston's premier supper club and live music venue, set inside Montrose's historic Tower Theatre. A landmark 1936 movie palace, its stage has hosted legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Leon Russell, Steve Martin and Ray Charles.
