Doc's Presents: Laila Biali

Laila Biali sits at the piano and sings her own songs, part jazz, part pop. She won a JUNO, Canada's top music award, for her record Laila Biali. This year she added a Grammy nod for her holiday album Wintersongs. Back home in Canada, she hosts Saturday Night Jazz on CBC. At Doc's, under the old Tower Theatre's high ceiling, she brings just her trio and lets the songs fill the room.

Doc's Presents: Laila Biali

Thu, Nov 12

Laila Biali grew up in Toronto and first trained as a classical pianist. She found her way into jazz, then started writing and singing her own songs. She hosts Saturday Night Jazz, a radio show on CBC back home in Canada. Her record Laila Biali won a JUNO. Her 2024 holiday album, Wintersongs, pairs strings and a chamber orchestra with her voice. It earned her a Grammy nod this year. At Doc's, inside the old Tower Theatre, it's just her trio, piano, bass and drums. She works her own songs in close, with a standard or two mixed in. She has played Carnegie Hall and shared a stage with Sting. Under a ceiling built in 1936, that same voice carries just as far with three players. It does the same job here that a full orchestra does on the record.

About Doc's Houston

Doc's is Houston's premier supper club and live music venue, set inside Montrose's historic Tower Theatre and is a 1936 movie palace whose stage has hosted legends from Ella Fitzgerald to Leon Russell. Opened in 2025 by bandleader and pianist Doc Watkins, the club brings the golden era of the supper club back to Westheimer. Live music runs Tuesday through Saturday, from Doc Watkins and his orchestra to world-class touring artists. Every show in the showroom is an intimate, ticketed concert with reserved seating and attentive table service from the first note to the last. Come early for chef Matt Fanella's classic supper club fare: steaks, seafood, and pastas with handcrafted cocktails and wine to match.
