Doc's Houston's Upcoming Shows
Fri, Aug 21
Eddie Wakes brings his velvety baritone to Doc’s for "L-O-V-E," a romantic evening of timeless songs accompanied by The Graeme Francis Orchestra. With a voice strikingly reminiscent of Nat King Cole, Eddie will bring warmth, elegance, and old-school charm to a program centered on love in all its forms.
Eddie’s life as a singer is the stuff movies are made of. He performed at the Super Bowl as a youngster, was later discovered singing on the streets of Los Angeles by Hollywood A-listers, and has gone on to perform for and alongside legendary artists. His rich, wide-ranging voice feels rooted in another era while remaining entirely his own.
“Eddie is a new, evocative voice.”
— Morgan Freeman
“Tremendous singer.”
— Elvis Costello
Raised in Topeka, Kansas, Eddie grew up singing with his eight brothers and was deeply influenced by his father, a pastor and gifted vocalist who was once invited by Lionel Hampton to sing with his big band. Inspired by artists including Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, Johnny Hartman, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, and James Brown, Eddie brings a lifetime of musical influence to this elegant celebration of love.

Houston saxophonist, Kyle Turner has been a mainstay in the Texas music scene for over three decades. After attending Jackson State University, he began touring with Luther Vandross and Johnnie Taylor. Turner then began to focus on his own career as a leader after moving to Austin, Texas in the early 1990s, where he held residencies at the top clubs on 6th Street. His CDs "It’s Time," "Sincerely Yours," "KT3," "Wrapped Tight," and "Live at Phil and Dereks" all garnered chart success and led to concerts and recordings with Bobby Lyle, Marion Meadows, Althea Rene, Joe Sample, Julian Vaughn, Michael Ward, Kirk Whalum, Kim Waters, and many other artists. When not leading his own band, Kyle can be heard on stage with award winning, multi-genre artist, Regina Belle.
Kyle’s soulful sound has been heard all over the world and continues to be a Texas treasure. When not on stage, you can hear Mr. Turner hosting his daily radio show, The Jazz Club, on KTSU 90.9 in Houston.

Step into the golden age of swing, when a big band could stop a country in its tracks. When the trombones of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, the clarinets of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, and the swing of Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton were the sound of an entire generation.
For one night, that era returns to Doc's.
At the heart of the evening is vocalist Bryan Anthony, who carried this songbook to audiences night after night on the road with the orchestras of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. He is joined by former Dorsey bandmate Joe Jenkins and his orchestra, players who have taken this music across the country and know it from the bandstand, not the library.
"Moonlight Serenade" glides with velvet elegance, "Sing, Sing, Sing" roars with runaway thunder, and the orchestra brings the era’s greatest arrangements back to life. The evening closes the way Tommy Dorsey always did, as the sentimental gentleman, with his signature theme, "I’m Getting Sentimental Over You."
This is more than a tribute. It's the golden age, brought back by the musicians who have spent their careers keeping it alive.
